San Jose, CA –
Hon. Jack Komar (Ret.), a recently retired Santa Clara County Superior Court judge, announced today he has joined JAMS, The Resolution Experts, the nation’s largest private provider of mediation and arbitration services. He will be based in the JAMS San Jose Resolution Center.
“Judge Komar spent more than 24 years serving on the Santa Clara County Superior Court bench and has extensive experience settling and managing complex cases,” said Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO. “He is passionate about controlling legal costs, has a reputation for being efficient and objective, and will be a wonderful addition to our San Jose Panel.”
“After spending years presiding over many high profile matters, I am honored to join such a prestigious panel of neutrals,” said Judge Komar.
Judge Komar was elected by his peers as the first Presiding Judge of the Unified Superior Court. As the sole Complex Litigation Judge since 2001, he has presided over matters in a wide variety of practice areas such as class actions/mass torts, environmental and securities.
Some of the most notable matters he’s presided over include corporate derivative litigation, employment class actions and water rights litigation.
In addition to his bench experience, Judge Komar initiated a voluntary mediation program in 2000. The program, developed to settle cases before large sums are expended on discovery and law and motion, is still available today to resolve unlimited civil cases.
Judge Komar was a member of the California Judicial Council from 2002 to 2005 serving as Chair of the Litigation Management Committee (2004 – 2005) and Vice Chair of the Executive and Planning Committee (2003 – 2005). He is also Past President and immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors, National Conference of Metropolitan Courts. Additionally, Judge Komar is a Charter Member of the American Inn of Court (William Ingram Chapter), Member of the American Bar Association, the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts, the California Judges Association and an honorary member of the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
Judge Komar served as Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice after graduating from law school and Deputy District Attorney for the Santa Clara County. He was in private practice until he was appointed to the Santa Clara County Superior Court in 1985.
He earned his J.D. (Order of the Coif) from the University of California Hastings College of the Law and received his B.A. from San Jose State University.
