Dallas – JAMS neutral, Hon. Bill H. Brister (Former), was presented with the 2009 State Bar of Texas Bankruptcy Law Section Banco Rotto Award at the recent Bankruptcy Bench Bar Conference, honoring his outstanding service, leadership, and accomplishments as a bankruptcy judge, attorney and mediator.
“I am honored to receive this award and would like to thank the Texas Bankruptcy Bar for this recognition,” said Judge Brister.
“We are proud to recognize Judge Brister’s significant contributions to the development of bankruptcy law within the State of Texas as well as nationally by awarding him with the highest and most distinguished Banco Rotto award,” said Berry D. Spears, Chair of the Texas State Bar Bankruptcy Law Section.
The term bankrupt is derived from “banco rotto” meaning “broken bench” in Italian. This prestigious award is given out annually to individuals for their contributions to, and their lasting impact on, the bankruptcy profession.
Judge Brister, who is based in the JAMS Dallas Resolution Center, specializes in resolving bankruptcy disputes and other civil matters. Judge Brister served more than fifteen years in the federal system, first as a United States Magistrate, and then as Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Texas. Judge Brister served on the bankruptcy bench during the enactment of the new Bankruptcy Code, and he authored more than 100 published opinions which helped develop and establish a new body of law under the Bankruptcy Code. Judge Brister has continued to utilize his expertise as a mediator in all aspects of bankruptcy matters at JAMS, and is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy.
