James M. Amend, Esq. brings over 40 years of intellectual property experience to his JAMS practice, including seven years as Chief Circuit Mediator for the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  In that capacity, he mediated over 500 cases involving appeals from claims of patent infringement and counterclaims for patent invalidity, inequitable conduct, and unfair competition arising nationwide from U.S. District Courts, the International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Patent Office.

These matters spanned a diverse set of technologies, including computers, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, mechanical inventions, industrial processes to name but a few.

  • Chief Circuit Mediator, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Washington, D.C., 2007-2013
  • Mediated claims in trademark matters arising from the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board
  • Founding member and chairman of the Expert Neutrals Panel of the International Trademark Association

  • Patent infringement charges by and against major computer and chip manufacturers and software and application developers
  • Patent infringement cases involving medical devices such as stents, surgical instruments, wound healing devices, and orthopedic tools and implants
  • Patent infringement cases involving devices and industrial processes in the water treatment, printing, packaging, power control, and construction fields
  • Patent infringement cases involving aircraft and helicopters
  • Design patent cases involving boats, containers, jewelry, and clothing
