Judge Cardenas has successfully mediated and arbitrated many family law cases since his retirement from the Superior Court and is a member of the JAMS Family Law panel.

He served on the Orange County Superior Court bench for over 20 years. During his tenure, Judge Cardenas

  • Presided over the family law OSC calendar including assignments to the interstate enforcement of child and spousal support cases
  • Handled family law motion matters including ex parte applications and requests for restraining orders
  • Heard family law trials involving issues of custody including Burgess "move away" disputes; paternity, child support and spousal support; Epstein credits and Watts charges; deferred sale of the family home; and domestic violence

In addition, Judge Cardenas presided over cases involving

  • Property rights, characterization of marital property, tracing of marital property, transmutation of assets, valuation of marital stocks (including minority and marketability discounts)
  • Accounting, interpretation and enforceability of pre-nuptial and marital settlement agreements, pensions and QDRO's
  • Insurance
  • Attorneys' fees

Judge Cardenas attends family law seminars sponsored by the Public Law Center, Orange County Bar Association MCLE programs and the Los Angeles County Bar. In addition, he subscribes to tapes and materials provided by the State Bar MCLE program, CEB and the Rutter On Line Group.

  • The only judge in Orange County to receive a commendation from the State Legislature upon his elevation to the bench
  • Recognized as “Judge of the Year” by the Orange County Women’s Bar Association and the West Court Bar Association
  • Winner of the Albert Schweitzer Award from the Orange County Grand Jury
  • Received recognition for his contributions to the law by Loyola Law School and the Mexican-American Bar Association of Orange County
