Background and Education
Judge William J. Howatt, Jr. (Ret.) joined JAMS following more than 27 years on the bench, including almost two decades with the San Diego County Superior Court. He first served as Presiding Judge of the Court before serving as an Independent Civil Calendar Judge, where he managed over 1,000 general and limited jurisdiction cases. During his time on the bench, Judge Howatt conducted jury and court trials, as well as law and motion and settlement conferences. From 2003 to 2006 he was Supervising Judge for Family Law. He continues to utilize his knowledge of evidence principles and rules to facilitate both mediations and arbitrations.
Attorneys who have worked with Judge Howatt describe him as well prepared and a thorough listener who is able to help parties find a resolution that is fair for all involved. His experience and patience are qualities that clients find crucial to dispute resolution.
