In 1846, Philip Crosthwaite was returning to San Diego from an otter hunting expedition when he learned of the outbreak of the Mexican-American war. Crosthwaite hurried back to San Diego, where, according to a historical account, he met a military officer who reaffirmed his intent to enlist.
