He has practiced full time as a mediator since 1993 and has served as court-appointed special master, with responsibilities for settlement efforts and/or discovery oversight, in a variety of federal and state litigations.

  • DES Product Liability Litigation
    Served since 1993 in New York as federal and state court-appointed settlement master in the DES (diethylstilbestrol) product liability litigation; mediated group and individual settlements in over 1,000 cases brought against some 15 pharmaceutical company defendants
  • In re Agent Orange Product Liability Litigation
    From 1989-93 served as court-appointed temporary special master for appeals in the administration of the Agent Orange class action settlement; reviewed and made recommendations to the Court with respect to several thousand appeals taken by claimants from eligibility and claim award decisions made by the claims administrator
  • In re Baycol Product Liability Litigation
    Served since 2003 as a court-appointed mediator and settlement master in In re Baycol Products Liability Litigation (D. Minn.), a multi-district litigation involving thousands of cases asserting claims of personal injury arising out of the use of the drug Baycol; mediated the resolution of hundreds of cases, in both group and individual settlements
  • In re Zyprexa Product Liability Litigation
    Served since 2004 as court-appointed special master for discovery in In re Zyprexa Product Liability Litigation (E.D.N.Y), a multi-district litigation involving thousands of cases asserting claims of personal injury arising out of the use of the drug Zyprexa; heard and ruled on numerous discovery disputes and issued many case management orders
  • Latino Officers Association v. City of New York
    From 2003-2005 served as court-appointed co-special master in Latino Officers Association v. City of New York (S.D.N.Y), mediating the settlement of a class action brought against the New York City Police Department asserting claims of racial discrimination on behalf of black and Latino police officers; participated in designing and implementing the procedures for a claims process that ultimately reviewed some 3,000 claims and distributed $17 million, and personally held more than 150 hearings on the discrimination claims of individual police officers
  • New York Life Limited Partnership Class Action
    From 1996-97 served as the settlement administrator, designated by the parties, in the settlement of the New York Life Limited Partnership Class Action, which resolved claims by individual investors arising from losses in oil and gas investment partnerships; as settlement administrator, reviewed and decided objections to claim determinations made by the claims resolution facility
  • September 11th Victim Compensation Fund
    From 2001-2004 served as Deputy Special Master for the U.S. Government's September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001, meeting with family members, elected officials and agency representatives, business owners, insurers, and legal community representatives, and assisting the Special Master in designing and implementing the Victim Compensation Fund, which ultimately distributed $7 billion to over 5,000 individuals and families
  • U.S. v. Legal Services of New York
    From 2001-2002 served as court-appointed special master in United States v. Legal Services for New York City, (D.D.C.), assisting the parties in designing and implementing a process for the review of Legal Services client files withheld from U.S. government auditors on privilege grounds
