As the current health crisis evolves, COVID-19 has adversely impacted the global entertainment industry, halting virtually all award shows and putting a stop to the production of film and television. Online competitors have also presented new, unforeseen challenges resulting in a decline in viewership, and the elimination of award shows has significantly reduced revenue derived from advertising. The ultimate impact of these developments is still unknown, but a conversation about the legal issues that have already emerged will equip practitioners with the tools that they need to navigate these challenges.

JAMS neutral Hon. Margaret A. Nagle (Ret.) will be joined by a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the following topics:

  • The Top Five Contract Issues for Film and Television Producers, Creators and Distributors (including force majeure and the impossibility of performance defenses)
  • Legal Liability for Cancellation of Live Events
  • Layoffs and Business Closures within the Entertainment Industry (including meet and confer requirements)
  • Due Diligence in Deal Closings

Panelists:

  • Duncan Crabtree, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, SAG/AFTRA
  • Brian Marler, Director, Houlihan Lokey’s Technology, Media & Telecom Group
  • Erica Van Loon, Partner and Team Leader, Lathrop GPM’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group
  • Hon. Margaret A. Nagle (Ret.), Mediator and Arbitrator, JAMS
  • Arnold P. Peter, Managing Partner, Peter Law Group (Moderator)
