Through the Lens: Focus on Gerald E. Rosen

From the federal bench to resolving the nation’s most complex disputes

Gerald E. Rosen, Retired Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, joined JAMS after nearly three decades of distinguished judicial service. Perhaps best known for guiding the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history—the Detroit bankruptcy—Judge Rosen played a central role in resolving the unprecedented case in just 17 months through intense, hands-on mediation.

Today, he applies that same steady leadership to complex business, intellectual property, antitrust and class action matters. His deep belief in the power of alternative dispute resolution is clear:

“Mediation works, and can produce great benefits much more efficiently than other approaches. … Early and committed use of mediated negotiation is likely to produce benefits that otherwise might not be achievable.”

Whether leading high-stakes litigation or advising internationally on rule-of-law reforms, Judge Rosen continues to guide parties toward resolution with the same integrity, insight and calm authority that defined his judicial career.
