The Singapore Convention and the New Global Enforceability of International Mediation Settlements

The Singapore Convention and the New Global Enforceability of International Mediation Settlements

Presented by Shanghai Commercial Mediation Center (SCMC)
Sponsored by JAMS

About the Event

The Singapore Convention, which is set to come into effect later this year with China amongst the signatories, will revolutionize international global dispute resolution. Mediation, long the ‘poor cousin’ of arbitration in the international commercial arena, is about to take pride of place on the world commercial stage. By virtue of the Convention, international mediation settlement agreements are about to become enforceable through the courts of all of the signatory Convention countries.

International commercial arbitration only came into its own after such awards become enforceable globally by virtue of the New York Convention. The Singapore Convention will do the same for international mediation.
