Hon. Allyson K. Duncan (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Washington, D.C.

Trailblazing former U.S. Court of Appeals judge joins JAMS

New Panelist Announcement

Washington, D.C. – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of Hon. Allyson K. Duncan (Ret.) to its panel. Prior to joining JAMS, Judge Duncan served over 15 years on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and one year on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Based in the Washington, D.C., Resolution Center, Judge Duncan will serve as an arbitrator and mediator, handling disputes in business and commercial, employment, environmental, federal, Title IX, intellectual property, product liability, international, utility law and health care.

Judge Duncan is respected and admired for her ability to tackle the most technical and complex cases with efficiency and professionalism. She’s also paved the way for others to follow, and we are grateful that she’s chosen to continue her career as a neutral at JAMS.

- Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO

Prior to appointment to the bench, Judge Duncan was a partner at Kilpatrick Stockton. She came to private practice from a term on the North Carolina Utilities Commission. Her labor and employment expertise was derived from serving with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, first as an appellate attorney arguing Title VII and other federal anti-discrimination cases in the federal courts, and ultimately as the agency’s legal counsel, representing it in defensive litigation and developing and revising agency guidelines, such as those related to sexual harassment.

Throughout my career, I’ve found effective ways of settling a variety of cases by listening intently to the facts and getting to the true core of the issue at hand. I am eager to begin this journey as a JAMS panelist and am looking forward to helping parties resolve their disputes.

- Hon. Allyson K. Duncan (Ret.), JAMS Mediator and Arbitrator

A consummate professional and a woman of many firsts, Judge Duncan graduated first in her class at Hampton University, became the first African American woman to serve as a justice on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, was the first African American president of the North Carolina Bar Association and was the first African American woman to sit on the Fourth Circuit bench.

Judge Duncan received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Hampton University and her J.D. from Duke Law School.
