Mediation and Human Rights - Leveraging Mediators for Peace Building and Conflict Prevention on the 75th Anniversary of the UDHR
Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11:00 - 12:30 p.m. ET
The 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a poignant reminder of the enduring importance of human rights in a world plagued by active conflicts. Despite the principles enshrined in the UDHR, numerous regions continue to experience conflicts that result in egregious human rights violations. This panel aims to facilitate a robust discussion on the intersection of mediation and human rights, with a specific focus on how skilled mediators can contribute to peace efforts in conflict-ridden areas. By bringing together experts in the fields of mediation, human rights, and conflict resolution, we intend to explore innovative approaches and practical strategies for harnessing mediation as a tool for promoting human rights and peace.

Topics to be covered will include:
  • An overview of the UDHR's significance and its continued relevance in the face of active conflicts. Discussion on how human rights violations perpetuate conflicts and hinder peace efforts.
  • The Mediator's Role in Safeguarding Human Rights
  • Identifying the challenges faced by mediators when operating in conflict zones with human rights concerns, and discussing the opportunities and strategies for mitigating these challenges.
  • An exploration of the international legal instruments and frameworks that support mediation efforts in the context of human rights.
  • Best Practices and Lessons Learned: Sharing experiences and best practices from mediators who have successfully integrated human rights considerations into their peace-building efforts.
