Hon. Joel Schneider (Ret.)
Hon. Joel Schneider (Ret.) is a former United States magistrate judge for the District of New Jersey who, prior to joining JAMS, served as of counsel at Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads, where he was chairperson of its Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice Group. Drawing on four decades as a federal judge and trial lawyer, he serves as a mediator, arbitrator, special master/adjudicator, neutral evaluator and court-appointed neutral in complex civil matters, including mass torts, class and collective actions, and commercial and contract, environmental, products liability, employment, civil rights, intellectual property, ERISA and personal injury cases. He is particularly known for his skill in managing and resolving multiparty, high-stakes disputes, including multidistrict and other aggregated proceedings.
During his 14 years on the federal bench, Judge Schneider managed, settled, tried and decided thousands of cases, and authored hundreds of opinions published in F. Supp., F.R.D., Westlaw and Lexis. Since his retirement from the bench he has mediated and arbitrated hundreds of cases. Before his judicial appointment, he spent 26 years in private practice focusing on complex civil litigation. He has been deeply engaged in the legal community as a member of the New Jersey Lawyers Advisory Committee; trustee of the Federal Bar Association of New Jersey, New Jersey Fee Arbitration program secretary, District IV; chairperson of the District of New Jersey’s Magistrate Judge Selection Committee (Camden) (2025–2026); and former member of the Federal-State Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States (appointed by Chief Justice Roberts). Judge Schneider has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers School of Law–Camden and Rowan University, and is a frequent lecturer at CLE programs nationwide.
Judge Schneider is recognized for his practical, results-oriented approach, meticulous preparation, responsiveness and ability to quickly master complex factual records and legal issues. He combines candid evaluation with persistent, creative problem-solving to help parties realistically assess risk and move from impasse to resolution. Parties value his calm demeanor, strong case-management skills and extensive knowledge and experience with electronically stored information (ESI) and case management disputes, which allow him to streamline even the most contentious and intricate matters while maintaining a fair, respectful and efficient process.
