JAMS Panelist Hon. Richard A. Levie (Ret.) Appointed Special Master for American Airlines / US Airways Merger

Panelist News

Washington, D.C. – JAMS announced today that Hon. Richard A. Levie (Ret.) was appointed to serve as a special master in the U.S. v. US Airways/American Airlines antitrust litigation. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly appointed Judge Levie to oversee all discovery and discovery disputes involving the litigation surrounding the merger of American Airlines and US Airways.

A full-time ADR professional, Judge Levie serves as a special master/discovery referee in large, complex cases with the goals of assisting the parties and the judicial officers to whom the cases are assigned. He has been appointed by judges and called upon by parties to handle significant and challenging cases, including U.S. v. Phillip Morris, U.S. v. ATT and T-Mobile and Cobell v. Jewell.

American Airlines and US Airways agreed to the merger Feb. 13 and stakeholders of each company blessed the deal. The plan needed final clearance from the Department of Justice’s antitrust attorneys. However the DOJ filed a lawsuit in August in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., seeking to block the merger outright rather than force concessions. The case is set to go to trial Nov. 25 before Judge Kollar-Kotelly.
