Hon. Howard S. Chasanow (Ret.)
(1937-2017)
JAMS neutral and retired Maryland Court of Appeals Judge Howard Chasanow passed away on April 2, 2017. Judge Chasanow became a full-time mediator after retiring from the bench in 1999, successfully resolving hundreds of complex disputes. He joined JAMS in 2011 and was instrumental in establishing the JAMS Maryland Resolution Center. He was recognized consistently in annual peer and client surveys as one of the top mediators in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Judge Chasanow served on the bench in Maryland for nearly three decades, gaining a reputation as an intelligent jurist and master settlement judge who revolutionized the use of mediation by the judiciary in highly contentious cases.
Judge Chasanow is survived by his wife, U.S. District Court Judge Deborah K. Chasanow; daughter, Andrea Gentle; grandchildren William and Alexander Gentle; and three sisters, Phyllis Richman, Myrna Chasanow and Ruth Heitin.
Judge Chasanow will be remembered by his colleagues at JAMS and the legal community at large as an exceptional attorney and judge as well as a dear friend and mentor. He will be sincerely missed.
