SAN FRANCISCO – JAMS, the largest private provider of ADR services worldwide, is proud to announce that panelist Cathy Yanni has been appointed Settlement Special Master in the Abilify MDL.
The MDL was formed to aggregate lawsuits alleging the medication Abilify caused users to develop severe gambling addictions and engage in other compulsive behaviors. Introduced in 2002, Abilify is a treatment for depression and bipolar disorders, as well as aggression, mood swings, and other behavior issues. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration required a warning label on the drug to inform users and doctors about the potential risk of gambling addiction and other compulsive behavior. Judge M. Casey Rodgers of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida appointed Ms. Yanni as the Settlement Special Master on February 28, following a recommendation by the Joint Settlement Committee.
Ms. Yanni has been a panelist with JAMS since 1998, and has served as Settlement Special Master in multiple large pharmaceutical and medical device cases in the past. Ms. Yanni will work with Magistrate Judge Gary R. Jones from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida on the settlements.
