Hon. Sandra Margulies (Ret.) Joins JAMS in San Francisco

Appellate court justice joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator

New Panelist Announcement

San Francisco – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of Hon. Sandra Margulies (Ret.) to its panel. Justice Margulies joins JAMS following a 38-year judicial career, during which time she served on the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, Division One; Alameda County Superior Court; and San Leandro-Hayward Municipal Court.

As a judge on the superior court, Justice Margulies managed a wide-ranging civil caseload, including civil trials, law and motion, and probate. Whether handling civil or trust and estate matters, she concentrated on resolving and settling the cases before trial. This experience, in addition to the vast number of appellate civil cases she has resolved, has allowed Justice Margulies to develop a fair and objective approach in evaluating disputes.

Based in the San Francisco Resolution Center, Justice Margulies will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator, handling business/commercial, education, employment, estate/probate/trusts, entertainment and sports, government and public agencies, personal injury and torts, professional liability and real estate cases. She is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country.

Throughout her years of service on the bench, Justice Margulies developed a reputation for her diligent preparation and conduct when handling cases. Her ability to connect with parties to understand their unique perspectives and work with empathy to resolve disputes has earned her the respect of the Northern California legal community.

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

Justice Margulies has held a variety of leadership positions. She was chair of the Evaluation and Nomination Committee for State Bar Judges from 2014 to 2023, chair of the Judicial Council Criminal Jury Instruction Advisory Committee from 2006 to 2011 and chair of the First District Court of Appeal’s Personnel Committee from 2021 to 2023. Throughout her judicial career, she has been extensively involved in judicial education and has taught courses in evidence, trials, probate, elder abuse and water law.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with parties from all walks of life and oversee cases that involve a wide range of areas under the law. This experience has provided me with valuable insight into how to tailor my approach to conflict resolution to fit the needs of each case. I look forward to continuing this work in my new role at JAMS.

- Hon. Sandra Margulies (Ret.)

Justice Margulies earned her B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of California, Los Angeles and her J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law.
