San Francisco – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Michael B. Murphy, Esq., has joined its panel. Mr. Murphy brings more than 40 years of experience representing clients in straightforward to complex, high-value matters across the U.S., Europe, London, Bermuda/Offshore and Asia-Pacific insurance markets.
Mr. Murphy spent the majority of his career at Severson & Werson (now Stinson LLP) from 1987 to 2025. His litigation and monitoring work involved advising both carriers and policyholders on insurance, reinsurance, subrogation and recovery issues. During his tenure, he worked as both the chair of the firm’s Insurance Practice Group and general counsel. While chair of the Insurance Practice Group, he not only litigated liability cases, but also advised and represented domestic and international insurers, reinsurers and numerous Lloyd’s of London syndicates in both primary and excess matters.
Based in the San Francisco Resolution Center, Mr. Murphy will serve as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee) and neutral evaluator, handling insurance, construction, professional liability, personal injury, class action/mass tort, entertainment and sports, international and cross-border, and energy matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.
“Because Mr. Murphy is a well-known legal professional in the insurance space, his domestic and international experience in high-stakes, dynamic matters will be incredibly valuable to clients. His work runs the gamut of coverage disputes, including those involving general liability, professional liability, art, health and fintech. We are honored that he has chosen to continue his ADR practice with JAMS.”
Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president
Beyond his litigation work, Mr. Murphy has significant experience in ADR, having served as a mediator, arbitrator and a Superior Court--and federal court–appointed special master. Earlier in his career, he served as a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana from 1984 to 1986. He also worked as an investigator for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office’s Consumer Protection Division.
“With four decades of combined litigation and ADR experience, I am excited to join the talented team at the San Francisco Resolution Center. My work both in and outside of the U.S. will allow me to offer a fresh, unique point of view to clients seeking positive, lasting resolutions in complex insurance disputes and several other practice areas across multiple industries.” said Mr. Murphy.
Mr. Murphy earned his B.A. from the University of Santa Clara and his J.D. from the University of Santa Clara School of Law.
