New York – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that the New York City Bar Association, through its Women in the Legal Profession Committee, has commissioned a portrait of Hon. Betty Weinberg Ellerin (Ret.) by local artist Patty Horing. The portrait was unveiled during a ceremony on May 6.

The portrait will be displayed in the City Bar's landmarked building at 42 W. 44th St. as part of the "Women on the Walls" initiative. The initiative honors female members of the legal profession with strong ties to the New York City legal community, with the goal of achieving gender representation on the walls of the City Bar's building.

“Justice Ellerin is a champion for women in the law and, by extension, equity within the greater legal system. Those who have had the fortune to meet or work with her know that her passion for advocacy is unmatched. We are delighted that her contributions and legacy will be commemorated by this portrait, and we thank the New York City Bar Association for its recognition.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Throughout her career, Justice Ellerin has held a multitude of prestigious roles. She was the first woman to be appointed deputy chief administrative judge for the courts of the City of New York in 1982. In 1985, she was the first woman to be appointed as an associate justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, and thereafter, the first woman to be appointed presiding justice of that court.

Justice Ellerin currently serves as co-chair of the Committee on Women in the Courts; co-chair of the Committee on Character and Fitness of the Appellate Division, First Department; and vice chair of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics. She is a founding member and director of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, past president of the New York Women’s Bar Association, past president of the National Association of Women Judges and past chair of its National Task Force on Gender Bias in the Courts.

In her current role at JAMS, Justice Ellerin serves as a mediator, arbitrator and neutral evaluator, and handles cases that span a wide variety of practice areas. She is also senior counsel at Alston & Bird LLP.
