JAMS neutral Cathy Yanni was recently featured in a KCAL News segment on CBS News, where she shared her insights on wildfire compensation programs and the choices facing Altadena residents affected by the recent Eden Fire.

In an interview with reporter Tom Wait, Yanni reflected on her role as trustee of the Fire Victim Trust in Northern California, where she led the distribution of more than $13 billion to approximately 70,000 wildfire victims, including those impacted by the Camp Fire in Paradise. She discussed the operational challenges and legal considerations involved in large-scale claims administration and mass settlement programs.

As Southern California Edison begins offering a voluntary compensation program to fire victims—requiring participants to waive their right to sue—Yanni emphasized the importance of understanding the structure of the program, required documentation, and the long-term implications of opting in.

“It’s really important to understand how the program is going to work,” Yanni told CBS. “Make sure you understand what you are releasing and that you won’t be able to sue. You have to be comfortable with that fact.”

Her perspective is especially relevant for those navigating the aftermath of natural disasters and considering alternatives to litigation through structured settlement programs.
