From Alternative to Essential: Leading in the New ADR Landscape
Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) has moved from the periphery of legal practice to its center. What was once viewed primarily as an alternative to litigation is now embedded in how organizations plan for and resolve disputes.
Across industries, ADR has become a routine component of dispute strategy. Counsel are incorporating it into contracts, early case assessments and broader risk management frameworks. That shift reflects a fundamental change in how companies approach conflict.
Recent findings from the 2025 ADR Industry Trends Survey, developed in collaboration with Law.com, underscore the depth of that integration. Ninety-nine percent of respondents report using ADR in at least some matters, and 96% expect that use to remain steady or increase. Nearly half report turning to ADR monthly. These figures do not suggest incremental growth. They signal that ADR is now a standard operating feature of modern legal workflows.
