Judge Kaplan joins JAMS after serving for 20 years as a federal and state court judge. During his 18 years as a federal magistrate judge for the Northern District of Texas, Judge Kaplan presided over more than 60 jury trials and authored more than 2,100 opinions and recommendations in a variety of civil cases. Prior to his appointment to the federal bench, Judge Kaplan served as a state appellate judge, where he participated in more than 220 appeals and authored more than 80 opinions. As a civil trial lawyer, he represented clients on both sides of the docket.
“Judge Kaplan is highly respected for his integrity, impartiality and ability to quickly grasp and analyze complicated legal issues, particularly those in patent and IP cases,” said Chris Poole, JAMS president and CEO. “We know parties on both sides respect him tremendously and that he will make an excellent addition to our panel.”
“Joining JAMS allows me to continue the important work of helping parties resolve complex and challenging cases,” said Judge Kaplan. “I’ve utilized dispute resolution throughout my years on the bench and I look forward to incorporating those skills in this next chapter in my professional life.”
Judge Kaplan graduated with his B.A., cum laude, from Vanderbilt University and received his J.D. from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. He is also board certified in both Civil Trial Law and Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
