Detroit – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of Phillip J. Shefferly, Retired Chief Judge, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, to its panel. Judge Shefferly joins JAMS following 18 years of distinguished service to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, including over a decade as chief judge.
As a judge on one of the heaviest bankruptcy court dockets in the country, Judge Shefferly conducted hundreds of bench trials and motion hearings in consumer and commercial cases that required prompt and thorough oral and written decisions. He presided over many large chapter 11 cases in a wide range of industries, including automotive, manufacturing, single asset and other real property, retail, professional services, hospitality, nursing home and health care.
Based in the Detroit Resolution Center, Judge Shefferly will serve as an arbitrator and mediator, handling bankruptcy, business, consumer and real property disputes.
Judge Shefferly is a highly regarded, nationally recognized authority on bankruptcy law. His extensive experience, coupled with his fair and even-tempered manner, makes him an excellent addition to the JAMS panel.
- Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO
Before taking the bench, Judge Shefferly was in private practice for 24 years, where he focused on business reorganizations and chapter 11 matters, including representations of business debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, creditors’ committees, landlords, shareholders and other parties in interest in bankruptcy proceedings. He has extensive trial and commercial litigation experience in both federal and state courts, as well as in purchase, sale, financing and other business transactions.
During my years in private practice and on the bench, I developed the skills needed to find creative solutions to a wide range of consumer and commercial disputes. I look forward to drawing on these experiences in my new role as a JAMS neutral.
- Phillip J. Shefferly, Retired Chief Judge, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan
Judge Shefferly received his B.A., with high distinction, from the University of Michigan and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School.
