Hon. Cheri Beasley (Ret.) Honored at NCSCHS Annual Dinner

Former Chief Justice Beasley celebrated for her historic contributions to the North Carolina judiciary

Panelist News Awards

Irvine – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Cheri Beasley (Ret.) has been honored by the North Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society (NCSCHS) at its Annual Dinner. The event occurred at the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh on Oct. 20. JAMS was a proud sponsor of this year’s event.

At the Annual Dinner, the NCSCHS recognized the extraordinary career of Chief Justice Beasley and her service across the district court, North Carolina Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of North Carolina. As chief justice, among other roles, her leadership marshaled the state’s judiciary through the COVID-19 pandemic, balancing public safety with statewide access to justice.

“We are proud to celebrate Chief Justice Beasley’s historic and trailblazing career, which has had a lasting impact on North Carolina’s judiciary. It’s a privilege to celebrate her achievements and to support an event that honors the history of North Carolina’s legal community.”

Kimberly Taylor, CEO and president

Chief Justice Beasley served on the North Carolina bench for more than 20 years, becoming the first African American woman to lead the state’s highest court when she was appointed chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2019. Earlier in her career, she served a decade as a district court judge, was elected to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2008 and became an associate justice of the Supreme Court in 2012.

During her tenure, Chief Justice Beasley championed key judicial reforms, including expanding access to treatment courts, introducing electronic filing systems and establishing the Rules Advisory Commission to modernize the state’s civil and procedural rules. She presided over thousands of cases across complex business and commercial, civil rights, employment, insurance, personal injury and product liability matters. She remains active in legal education and community initiatives, particularly those advancing education and hunger relief.

The NCSCHS is a nonprofit organization based in Raleigh and plays a vital role in preserving North Carolina’s legal heritage while encouraging a deeper understanding of its judicial past.
