Newman (Active/Retired) was honored as the inaugural recipient of the P. Michael Duffy Award by the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association. The award was presented during the organization’s Annual Meeting in Savannah, Georgia.
The P. Michael Duffy Award was established to recognize exceptional South Carolina Circuit Court and District Court judges who have demonstrated excellence, fairness and integrity in the administration of justice.

Judge Newman joined JAMS after serving more than 23 years as a judge on the South Carolina Circuit Court, where he presided over the South Carolina State Grand Jury and numerous high-profile civil and criminal cases, including The State v. Richard Alexander Murdaugh. A business court judge for over a decade, he has extensive experience overseeing complex commercial and class action litigation.
Throughout his judicial career, Judge Newman presided over a broad range of cases, including professional negligence, business torts, construction defect, governmental liability, insurance coverage, wrongful death and class actions. He is recognized for his calm demeanor, thoughtful decision-making and even-handed approach to resolving complex disputes.
