Hon. Clifton B. Newman Receives Honorary Degree From Roger Williams University School of Law

Esteemed judge receives honorary degree and serves as keynote commencement speaker

Atlanta– JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to share that Hon. Clifton B. Newman (Ret./Active) has received an honorary degree from Roger Williams University School of Law. Judge Newman served as the keynote speaker at this year’s law school commencement ceremony, which occurred on May 16.

The ceremony recognized trailblazers, including Judge Newman, who are making a collective impact across the globe. Founded in 1993, Roger Williams University School of Law is the only law school in Rhode Island. Judge Newman was recognized and acknowledged for his work as a jurist.

Judge Newman joined JAMS in 2024 after serving over 23 years as a judge on the South Carolina Circuit Court. While on the bench, he presided over the South Carolina State Grand Jury and numerous high-profile civil and criminal cases, including, most recently, The State v. Richard Alexander Murdaugh. Prior to serving as a jurist, he worked as an assistant solicitor for Williamsburg County for over 16 years and spent 24 years in private practice. 

Judge Newman is well known for his extensive complex litigation experience. At JAMS, he specializes in several practice areas, including business/commercial, class action and mass tort, construction

government and public agency, health care, insurance and personal injury. Recently, he also received an honorary Doctor of Public Service from Coastal Carolina University in 2024 and an honorary Doctor of Laws from South Carolina State University in 2023.
