Hon. James O. Browning (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Dallas
Longtime federal jurist joins JAMS as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee), neutral evaluator and hearing officer
DALLAS – JAMS, the premier provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. James O. Browning (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Browning joins JAMS following a 45-year legal career, including more than 23 years of service on the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.
During his judicial service, Judge Browning presided over complex federal civil litigation involving class actions, mass torts and other multiparty proceedings, as well as business and commercial, securities, antitrust and competition, employment, insurance, product liability, personal injury, civil rights, energy and utilities, administrative law, American Indian tribal law and real estate disputes. His docket included securities class actions and related enforcement proceedings, multidistrict litigation, an oil and gas royalty class action and litigation arising from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fires.
Based in the Dallas Resolution Center, Judge Browning will serve as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee), neutral evaluator and hearing officer. He brings a case-specific approach grounded in thorough preparation, analytical rigor, active listening and close attention to the parties’ interests and concerns.
“Judge Browning’s extensive judicial and litigation background has given him a deep understanding of the legal, factual and practical considerations that shape complex disputes. His thoughtful approach, careful preparation and ability to address multifaceted issues will help parties and counsel assess challenges, evaluate options and work toward resolution.”
Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president
Before joining the bench, Judge Browning practiced civil litigation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, handling bench and jury trials involving commercial contracts, fraud, construction, medical malpractice, product liability and personal injury. He also served as deputy attorney general of New Mexico and clerked for Chief Judge Collins J. Seitz of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. of the Supreme Court of the United States.
“My approach to ADR combines analytical thinking with emotional intelligence and empathy. My goal is to listen closely, identify the factual and legal issues driving a dispute and remain attentive to the practical and interpersonal dynamics that may affect resolution,” said Judge Browning. “I look forward to drawing on my experience from the bench and private practice to help parties assess their disputes and identify practical paths forward.”
Judge Browning earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law Review, and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Yale University.
