Hon. Liam O’Grady (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Washington, D.C.

Former federal judge joins JAMS as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee) and neutral evaluator

Washington, D.C. – JAMS, the premier provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Liam O’Grady (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge O’Grady brings decades of judicial, trial and ADR experience resolving complex, high‑stakes disputes.

From 2007 to 2023, Judge O’Grady served as a district judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, where he presided over thousands of cases on the renowned “Rocket Docket.” His work included sophisticated patent, antitrust and securities matters, and he played a key role in shaping local patent discovery rules in both the Eastern District of Virginia and the Eastern District of Texas. He also sat by designation on the Fourth Circuit, Ninth Circuit and Federal Circuit courts of appeals and served on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Based in the Washington, D.C., Resolution Center, Judge O’Grady will serve as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee) and neutral evaluator, handling intellectual property, business and commercial, employment and other complex matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

“Judge O’Grady is widely regarded for the depth and breadth of his judicial and trial background, as well as for his contributions to the development of federal court procedures. His thoughtful approach and steady presence in high-stakes matters make him an excellent addition to the JAMS panel in our nation’s capital.”

Kimberly Taylor, JAMS CEO and president

Before his district court appointment, Judge O’Grady served as a United States magistrate judge, where he resolved complex discovery disputes and conducted settlement conferences in highly contentious matters. Earlier in his career, he practiced for a decade as an intellectual property litigator and first chaired over 100 jury trials as an assistant United States attorney and state prosecutor. Following his retirement from federal service, he founded an ADR practice and continues to teach trial advocacy at The George Washington University Law School and the National College of Trial Advocacy.

“I draw on my extensive experience as a jurist and neutral to manage complex, often time sensitive disputes,” said Judge O’Grady. “My approach is pragmatic and disciplined, informed by years on the federal bench, with a focus on helping parties evaluate risk, narrow issues and reach informed resolutions.”

Judge O’Grady earned his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College.
