USC Gould School of Law and JAMS are pleased to invite you to our Fifth Annual Symposium.

Our Annual International Arbitration Symposium for 2020 was postponed on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.  We offer, in its place, a series of three webinars covering the planned topics from last year.  Each will run about 90 minutes and will be free to attendees.

We have added a networking session immediately following each webinar – each panelist will conduct a separate break-out session on a selected topic for about 30 minutes following the main program.  This is an opportunity to interact in smaller groups with our panelists and other attendees.

The Singapore Convention and the Rise of Cross-Border Commercial Mediation: Challenges and Opportunities

More than 110 countries around the world now have a national law on mediation. Mediation centers have been established in remote corners of the globe, and mediation trainings and accreditation programs are being offered on an international scale. And in 2008, the European Union passed the Directive on certain aspects of mediation in civil and commercial matters. These developments notwithstanding, the reality is that compared to arbitration, cross-border and domestic mediation are sorely underutilized the world over. Why? Will the Singapore Convention make good on its promise to promote mediation as an effective method of resolving trade disputes?
