Justice Moreno to be honored as legal luminary, fierce advocate for diversity at fundraiser

Panelist News

Irvine, Calif. – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Carlos R. Moreno (Ret.) will be honored at the Legal Education Access Pipeline’s (LEAP) annual fundraiser, “Take the Leap,” on October 22.

Justice Moreno will be honored alongside other outstanding individuals for their tireless work to enhance diversity within the legal profession. This fundraising event seeks to recognize these individuals for their contributions, which are paramount to the success and vitality of society.

LEAP was founded by Cindy Lopez, who served for three decades as a deputy attorney general for the California Attorney General’s Office and spent 13 years in leadership in the college access nonprofit space, to build access to law school education for groups that are underrepresented in the field. LEAP’s annual fellowship program includes a series of workshops and mentoring opportunities that aim to prepare students for law school and, ultimately, to be change agents in their communities.

“Justice Moreno is an advocate for equity within the law and a leader within the legal community. Throughout his career, he has served as a champion for diversity, equality, transparency and accountability—beliefs that are all reinforced by the mission of LEAP. We are proud to see him recognized by this organization and are honored to have him as one of our panelists.”

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

Justice Moreno joined JAMS after a 25-year career on the judiciary, including 10 years on the Supreme Court of California. During his tenure, Justice Moreno authored over 140 majority opinions on a wide range of precedent-setting cases, including significant opinions regarding LGBT rights, arbitration and insurance policy coverage.

Justice Moreno is a first-generation Mexican American and fluent Spanish speaker. He was the third Latino to serve on the Supreme Court of California. He has been honored with numerous accolades for his work off and on the bench, including recognition for his pioneering achievements and his work in child advocacy.
