Hon. Jeffrey S. Brand (Ret.) Joins JAMS in the San Francisco Bay Area

Retired superior court judge joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator, referee/special master, neutral evaluator, hearing officer and temporary judge/judge pro tem

New Panelist Announcement

San Francisco, Calif. – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Jeffrey S. Brand (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Brand joins JAMS following nearly a decade of service on the Alameda County Superior Court, where he presided over a wide range of complex disputes.

While on the bench, Judge Brand chaired the court’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and served as the supervising judge for the General Civil Department and as a civil trial judge. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was the dean of the University of San Francisco School of Law for 14 years, and before that, he was a professor of law, teaching courses in civil procedure, evidence, remedies, labor law, constitutional law and practical skills training. Additionally, he has over 20 years of international experience, including ADR trainings in civil law countries.

Judge Brand will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, referee/special master, neutral evaluator, hearing officer and temporary judge/judge pro tem, handling business/commercial, construction defect, personal injury/tort, international, professional liability, real property/real estate and school/education cases. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

Judge Brand has established a tremendous legal skill set over the course of his decades-long career while serving on the bench, in private practice and as an educator. He is recognized for his strong ability to oversee cases with a balanced, evenhanded approach and for his aptitude for working creatively with parties to resolve cases.

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

As an attorney, Judge Brand maintained a general civil practice, with a focus on labor and employment law, including federal and state employment discrimination class actions and cases involving hiring, promotion and wrongful termination issues. His experience also includes sports law, having served as the co-managing general partner and general counsel for the Reno Silver Sox, a minor league baseball team in the Class A California League. Judge Brand also founded and served as editor-in-chief of the Federal Litigator, a legal journal analyzing federal rules and practice cases.

Successful mediations and arbitrations require the same basic qualities: a sense of fairness and the ability to relate to the parties, to listen and to creatively seek resolution. These are the qualities I strive to bring to every case.

- Hon. Jeffrey S. Brand (Ret.)

Judge Brand earned his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
