Former United States district judge joins JAMS as an arbitrator, mediator and court-appointed neutral

New Panelist Announcement

Detroit – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Richard B. McQuade, Jr. (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge McQuade joins JAMS with over 30 years of private dispute resolution experience as an arbitrator, mediator and special master.

Throughout his decades of experience in ADR, Judge McQuade has arbitrated and mediated a wide array of matters, including shareholder derivative suits, insurance coverage and bad faith claims, antitrust litigation, construction disputes, environmental actions, professional malpractice cases and employment disputes. Earlier in his career, he served as the president and CEO of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Ohio. He also served on its board of directors for 20 years. In both roles, he oversaw corporate litigation and risk and provided practical, results-oriented advice to businesspeople.

Based in the Detroit Resolution Center, Judge McQuade will serve as an arbitrator, mediator and court-appointed neutral, handling antitrust, appellate, class action/mass torts, commercial, complex litigation, construction, contracts, employment, environmental/CERCLA, health care, insurance/reinsurance and medical malpractice cases. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

Judge McQuade has decades of experience serving on the bench and in the private sector as an attorney and corporate executive. He possesses a deep ability to evaluate cases from those different perspectives, assisting parties across a wide range of practice areas.

- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO

Judge McQuade served as a United States district judge for the Northern District of Ohio from 1986 to 1989. During his time on the court, he also sat by designation in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He also served as a judge on the Ohio Court of Common Pleas from 1978 to 1986 and from 1995 to 2005.

My background as a federal judge and insurance industry CEO, combined with 30 years as mediator and arbitrator, allows me to quickly grasp essential issues, identify litigation risks and help parties reach resolution in contentious disputes.
