Irvine, Calif. – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Allyson K. Duncan (Ret.) was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at The American Lawyer Industry Awards. The award was presented on Nov. 13.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have made an impact on the legal profession, demonstrating exceptional leadership, service and dedication to the advancement of justice. The event serves as not only a platform to honor these achievements, but also a means to inspire excellence and innovation within the legal industry.
“Judge Duncan’s remarkable career stands as a powerful example of leadership, service and dedication to justice. We are thrilled to see her extraordinary contributions recognized with this prestigious honor.”
Kimberly Taylor, CEO and president of JAMS
Judge Duncan joined JAMS shortly after stepping down from the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, where she was also active in international judicial circles. Following her appointment to the bench, Chief Justice Roberts tasked her to lead the International Judicial Relations Committee of the US Judicial Conference, and in that role she traveled around the world working with judiciaries from other countries and other international judicial organizations. Prior to her appointment to the bench she served as Legal Counsel to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a professor of law, and partner in a major law firm specializing in regulatory issues.
A trailblazer throughout her career, Judge Duncan was the first African American woman to serve on both the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the Fourth Circuit and was the first African American president of the North Carolina Bar Association. Committed to judicial independence and the rule of law, Judge Duncan is a former Regional President of the International Association of Judges (IAJ) and member of the Board of the International Institute of Justice Excellence. She is widely respected for her intellect, fairness and ability to resolve complex legal issues with insight and integrity.
