Mr. Burns joins with more than 30 years of experience in technology, intellectual property and complex commercial litigation, as well as over 21 years as a nationally respected arbitrator and mediator.
Mr. Burns has presided over 500 arbitrations and 150 mediations, including disputes valued at over $100 million and numerous international cases. From 2023 to 2025, he managed his own nationally recognized legal practice following over 13 years as a partner, arbitrator and mediator at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP. Prior to 2010, he worked at Am Law 100 and regional firms, including Steptoe & Johnson and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae. He has also served as an arbitrator and mediator with the American Arbitration Association and the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR), is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and has been recognized by the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center on its Tech List of the world’s leading technology neutrals.
Based in the Century City and Los Angeles Resolution Centers, Mr. Burns will serve as an arbitrator and mediator, handling business and commercial, employment, technology/internet, intellectual property (patent, trade secret, copyright and trademark), entertainment and sports, franchise, health care, life sciences, insurance, cybersecurity and privacy, professional liability, securities, finance, real estate and international disputes. He maintains offices in Los Angeles and Phoenix/Scottsdale and is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

As part of his contributions to the broader legal community, Mr. Burns taught ADR courses for over 15 years at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law’s top-ranked Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, including courses on mediation of entertainment and intellectual property disputes, arbitration practice and advocacy, and ADR ethics. He also designed and taught Patent Litigation and Biotechnology Licensing & Litigation at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law for more than 12 years. Beginning in spring 2026, he will serve as adjunct faculty at USC Gould School of Law, teaching ADR Law and Policy. Mr. Burns has also held many leadership positions in legal organizations and has been a prolific speaker at national and regional conferences.

Mr. Burns received his B.S. in computer science, magna cum laude, from Boston College Carroll School of Management and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston College Law School. To further enhance his ability to apply innovative, client-focused approaches in mediation, Mr. Burns is pursuing a master’s in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology.
