Hon. Stuart M. Rice (Ret.) Joins JAMS in Los Angeles
Los Angeles – JAMS, the premier provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce that Hon. Stuart M. Rice (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Rice joins following more than two decades of distinguished judicial service presiding over a broad range of matters.
From 2005 to 2025, Judge Rice served on the Los Angeles County Superior Court, including on its Complex Civil Litigation Panel from 2022 to 2025. Earlier in his judicial career, he served as a court commissioner and an as-needed juvenile referee for the Superior Court. Before his appointment to the bench, he built a distinguished private practice as a senior partner at Rice & Rothenberg, where he handled civil, tort and probate litigation, as well as juvenile defense matters.
Based in the Los Angeles Resolution Center , Judge Rice will serve as a mediator, arbitrator, court-appointed neutral (special master/referee), neutral evaluator and allocator , handling business and commercial, employment, professional liability, construction, insurance, real property, class action, entertainment and sports matters, among several others. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

Judge Rice additionally served as chair of the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Temporary Judge Committee for 15 years and was a three-time member of the court’s Executive Committee. He also held leadership roles as assistant supervising judge of the criminal division and president of the Benjamin Aranda III chapter of the American Inns of Court. As a judicial officer, Judge Rice was elected as the president of the California Judges Association (CJA) (2017–2018) and served on the Judicial Council of California during the same time period. He is entering his fourth consecutive year as president of the California Judges Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CJA. He was recognized as Judge of the Year by the Long Beach Bar Association in 2020 and the South Bay Bar Association in 2012. Throughout his career, he has been a trusted mentor and teacher to colleagues, young lawyers and law students, offering guidance on both professional practice and the responsibilities of public service.

Judge Rice earned his B.A., magna cum laude , from Tufts University and his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.
