Hon. Benson Everett Legg (Ret.), former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, Joins JAMS

Greenbelt, MD – JAMS, the largest private provider of mediation and arbitration services worldwide, today announced the addition of Hon. Benson Everett Legg (Ret.) to its panel. Judge Legg will be based in the JAMS Greenbelt Resolution Center. He will serve as an arbitrator, mediator and special master in a variety of disputes including Antitrust, Business/Commercial, Class Action/Mass Tort, Employment, Insurance, Intellectual Property, Personal Injury/Torts and Professional Liability.

Judge Legg, who joins JAMS after serving as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland for 21 years, brings deep experience to his full-time ADR practice. As a federal trial judge, he presided over every type of complex civil case that comes before the federal courts. Before joining the bench, he spent 16 years as a business litigator representing clients in a wide array of cases including antitrust, breach of contract, civil rights, employment discrimination, insurance coverage, intellectual property, toxic torts, and securities. After taking senior status in June of 2012, Judge Legg conducted settlement conferences for the district court in a variety of matters.

“Judge Legg has an excellent reputation for being well-prepared, fair and efficient,” said Chris Poole, JAMS president and CEO. “During his career on the federal district court, he earned high marks for his legal ability, even-handedness and judicial temperament. He will make a terrific addition to our panel.”

“As a judge, I appreciated that some cases can only be resolved by trial, and I was happy to give parties their day in court,” said Judge Legg. “Many cases, however, can be resolved through effective mediation, sparing the parties the risk, expense and anxiety of a trial. I look forward to a new career as a member of a talented and experienced JAMS panel.”

Judge Legg graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. from Princeton University. He earned his J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review and the Order of the Coif.
