Awards Panelist News

San Diego JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is proud to announce that Hon. Irma E. Gonzalez has been honored with the Woman of Color Excellence Award by the Diverse Women’s Committee of the Lawyers Club of San Diego.

Presented annually, this award honors a woman of color who has both demonstrated excellence within her field and advanced the status of women of color in the law or society. A virtual reception was held on February 4 by the Diverse Women’s Committee to celebrate the accomplishments of Judge Gonzalez.

Judge Gonzalez is a tremendously valued member of the San Diego legal community, and she continues to pave the way for others through her hard work and dedication. Her many accomplishments and the deep reverence held for her by her peers are testaments to her tenacity and immense talent. We are fortunate to have her on our panel.

- Chris Poole, JAMS President and CEO

After a judicial career spanning nearly 30 years, Judge Gonzalez joined JAMS in San Diego in 2013. Earlier in her career, she was appointed to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California in 1992—the first Mexican-American woman to be appointed as a federal judge. She served as chief judge from 2005 until 2012. Prior to her appointment to the federal bench, she served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Arizona and the Central District of California, as well as an attorney in private practice.

At JAMS, Judge Gonzalez serves as an arbitrator, mediator and special master in the San Diego Resolution Center, and is highly regarded in the legal community for her fairness and skill in resolving complex disputes. She handles cases involving a wide range of issues, including business, employment, intellectual property and securities matters.
