Irvine, Calif. – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce the addition of Hon. Katherine "Kate" Chilton (Ret.) to its panel. Judge Chilton joins JAMS after serving for three years on the Los Angeles County Superior Court following over 25 years of experience as an in-house entertainment attorney at Warner Bros. and Netflix, Inc.
During her time as an in-house attorney, Judge Chilton handled copyright and trademark infringement cases as well as interference cases, participation accounting matters, First Amendment disputes and commercial disputes. As head of content litigation at Netflix, she also undertook employment-related disputes and provided risk analyses for business and legal affairs. She has settled hundreds of matters as in-house counsel, both directly and with the assistance of mediators.
Based in the Los Angeles Resolution Center, Judge Chilton will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, special master/referee and neutral evaluator, handling entertainment and sports, intellectual property, business/commercial, personal injury/torts and employment cases. She is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country.
Judge Chilton is known for her strong ability to take on challenging cases in a way that promotes the full and open involvement of parties. She prioritizes getting to the root of each dispute and using her leadership skills and extensive experience to drive the resolution process forward and determine an effective solution.
- Chris Poole, JAMS CEO
Judge Chilton was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2020. After a short stint in criminal court, she was assigned to civil court and handled breach of contract, personal injury and employment matters. Prior to serving on the bench and working in-house, Judge Chilton worked on commercial and entertainment litigation matters at the law firm Skadden Arps.
Over my years of experience, I have learned how to work with parties to understand the nuances that shape their perspectives. Each party comes to the table with their own concerns, motivations and desires, and the power of dispute resolution can be best leveraged by knowing how to balance those perspectives to help find a resolution.
- Hon. Katherine "Kate" Chilton (Ret.)
Judge Chilton earned her B.B.A., with high honors, from the University of Iowa and her J.D., with honors, from the University of Iowa School of Law.
